Is There Sufficient Evidence for Criticality in Cortical Systems?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Numerous studies have proposed that specific brain activity statistics provide evidence the operates at a critical point, which could implications for brain’s information processing capabilities. A recent paper reported identical scalings and criticality signatures arise in variety of different neural systems (neural cultures, cortical slices, anesthetized or awake brains, across both reptiles mammals). The diversity these states calls into question claimed role processing. We analyze methodology used to assess replicate this analysis spike trains two non-critical systems. These pass all tests aforementioned paper. This provides crucial control (which is absent from original study) suggests may not be sufficient establish system criticality. Hence whether remains an open it evident interest develop more robust methods address questions.

Is cortical criticality unique?

There are indications that for optimizing neural computation, neu-ral networks-including the brain-operate at criticality. Previous approaches have, however, used diverse fingerprints of criticality, leaving open the question whether they refer to a unique critical point or whether there could be several. Using a recurrent spiking neural network as the model, we demonstrate that avalanche criti...

Paralympic Judo: Is there Evidence for Match Rigging among Athletes with Disabilities?

Objectives. This paper studies the existence or non-existence of match-fixing (or rigging) among judo wrestlers (judoka) with disabilities during the consecutive Paralympic Games from 1988 until 2016. Methods. In our analysis, we use the institutional framework that makes it easy understand and model the incentives of the wrestlers using the readily available data. Our data set consists of off...

Is there sufficient evidence for tuning fork tests in diagnosing fractures? A systematic review

OBJECTIVE To determine the diagnostic accuracy of tuning fork tests for detecting fractures. DESIGN Systematic review of primary studies evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of tuning fork tests for the presence of fracture. DATA SOURCE We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, AMED, EMBASE, Sports Discus, CAB Abstracts and Web of Science from commencement to November 2012. We manually searched the refere...

Neuroinflammation in Parkinson's disease: is there sufficient evidence for mechanism-based interventional therapy?

The inflammatory response in the brain associated with most chronic neurodegenerative diseases is termed neuroinflammation. Neuropathological and neuroradiological studies indicate that in certain neurodegenerative disorders neuroinflammation may be detectable years before significant loss of neurons occurs. In this review, we discuss the evidence from human studies and experimental models that...

Is there sufficient evidence for encouraging widespread use of HRT to prevent disease?

Sir, I enjoyed Philip Hannaford's measured and incisive editorial on the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) (February Journal). 1 We too have been interested in the issue of using HRT for the prevention of osteoporosis, and have conducted an extensive literature search on the subject as part of a project to develop evidence-based audit criteria for osteo-porosis in primary care. 2 Despite...
